Research Focus

The Ultrafast Nonlinear Optics Lab (UNO) investigates light–matter interaction using ultrashort laser pulses, spanning both classical and quantum regimes. For years, the lab has been at the forefront of research in laser micromachining of transparent materials, supported by strong partnerships with industry and collaborations at the national and international levels.

Key areas of expertise include:

  • Laser Micromachining: UNO has a 15-year track record of collaboration with leading companies such as Altechna Ltd (Vilnius), Workshop of Photonics (Vilnius), and Technoprobe Spa (Italy). Our work focuses on cutting and drilling tough transparent materials—such as sapphire, Gorilla Glass, tempered glass, and diamond—for technological applications in microfluidics, sensing, and microelectronics.
  • Extreme Phenomena Laser Control: We explore the laser-driven control of extreme phenomena, including electric discharge management, and develop advanced 3D beam shaping techniques for tailored light-matter interaction.

Equipment and Facilities

UNO is equipped with:

  • Amplified picosecond and femtosecond pulsed laser sources.
  • Advanced radiation diagnostics, including high-quantum-efficiency cooled CCD cameras and imaging spectrometers for angular and spectral characterization.
  • A high-resolution optical microscope.
  • A spatial light modulator for beam shaping, enabling the creation of non-diffractive beams such as Bessel beams.
  • A motorized 3-axis laser micromachining setup with software control, dedicated to precision micromachining of transparent materials.
